Ear Infections, Antibiotics, and Asthma: A “Perfect Storm”

If your child has experienced antibiotics over and over again because of recurring ear infections, you are far from alone. For countless families, the same frustrating cycle plays out again and again.

Your child gets sick. The illness becomes an ear infection. Antibiotics seem to help, only for another cold or virus to come along and start the process all over again. Before long, you may find yourself back at the pediatrician’s office, dealing with another painful infection and another prescription. Perhaps you’ve already been sent to an ENT, and now ear tubes or surgery are being discussed.

But in the middle of this frustrating cycle, there is one important question that deserves attention:

Why does this keep happening?

If you’re tired of recurring ear infections, repeated rounds of antibiotics, and the growing pressure to consider ear tube surgery, there may be another part of the story worth understanding. The root of the problem is often overlooked, and identifying what is happening beneath the symptoms can provide an entirely different perspective.

A Story That May Sound Familiar

Consider the story of one little boy, Elijah.

Before his family discovered Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic Care, Elijah experienced countlewss ear infections and even failed his hearing test. Nearly every time he became sick, the illness progressed into another ear infection. He received antibiotics repeatedly, sometimes back-to-back for months, and had already had a failed surgery to have tubes placed.

Even after an antibiotic finally cleared one infection, it seemed like the next virus would quickly bring another one with it.

His ENT’s next recommendation was discussing a second tubes surgery.

Elijah’s mom, however, felt there had to be something more to the story. When she saw his INSiGHT Scans, she noticed that much of his nervous system was showing “in the red.” For her, it provided a new perspective on what Elijah’s body had been experiencing.

His body wasn’t necessarily failing him. His system was stuck.

The Story May Begin Earlier Than You Think

One piece of the puzzle that many parents don’t hear about is the relationship between the upper neck and the structures involved with the ears and sinuses.

The top two vertebrae of the neck share nerves, muscles, and other structures associated with the inner ear and sinuses. Because of this connection, different birth interventions — including induction, forceps, vacuum extraction, and C-section — can place considerable stress on a baby’s head, neck, and brainstem.

That early physical stress may contribute to something called subluxation, which involves misalignment, fixation, and neurological interference in the upper cervical region.

Think of this area like a drainage pathway. When movement in the upper neck is restricted, the body’s normal ability to move fluid through the ears, sinuses, and lymphatic system can also be affected.

In general, greater intervention during birth may mean greater early neurospinal stress, which can later present as ongoing ear-related challenges.

Two Important Factors That Can Contribute to Recurring Ear Infections

1. Inadequate drainage

The body relies on movement to help drain the middle ear and lymphatic system — not simply gravity.

When the upper cervical vertebrae aren’t moving as they should, the body’s natural “pump” for drainage can become less effective. Fluid can then remain trapped instead of moving through the system normally.

2. Reduced neuro-immune function

The brainstem plays an important role in coordinating the body’s immune response. When the nervous system is experiencing ongoing stress, the body’s ability to appropriately respond can also be affected.

When poor drainage and reduced immune function occur together, the result can be a frustrating pattern of repeated infections.

In other words, recurring ear infections may not simply be a matter of bad luck. There can be an underlying pattern contributing to why they continue.

Why Antibiotics Don’t Address the Whole Picture

For many parents, antibiotics seem like the natural solution. And in certain situations, they absolutely have an important role.

However, antibiotics don’t address every type of infection. Research going back to the 1980s has shown that antibiotics have limited effectiveness for many ear, sinus, and respiratory infections because a large number of these illnesses are viral. Antibiotics work against bacteria, not viruses.

Antibiotics are also the leading cause of emergency department visits related to adverse drug events in children. Additionally, research has associated antibiotic exposure early in life — particularly during the first 12 months — with an increased risk of behavioral difficulties later in childhood.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has also incorporated a “watch and wait” approach for many uncomplicated ear infections.

This isn’t an argument that antibiotics should never be used. There are situations where they are appropriate and necessary.

The bigger point is that antibiotics are designed to address certain infections — not the underlying factors that may be contributing to recurring problems with drainage and nervous-system function.

The “Perfect Storm” Pathway Parents Often Aren’t Told About

The cycle can become even more complicated when recurring ear infections eventually lead to discussions about ear tubes.

Ear tube surgery is performed more than 700,000 times each year in the United States, with approximately $2 billion spent on the procedure.

Tubes can create a temporary pathway for fluid to drain from the middle ear, but they don’t necessarily address why the drainage problem developed in the first place.

As the pattern continues, fluid and congestion may begin showing up in other areas, including the tonsils, adenoids, sinuses, and throat. More infections can mean additional rounds of antibiotics and, for some children, discussions about tonsil or adenoid removal.

The progression may eventually extend farther down into the respiratory system, with symptoms appearing in the lungs and potentially presenting as asthma or allergies.

At Perfect by Design, this progression is referred to as The Perfect Storm.

The idea is that one unresolved underlying issue can continue expressing itself in different ways as a child grows — with one diagnosis or symptom appearing after another.

Looking Beyond the Symptoms

Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic Care approaches the process by first looking at the nervous system.

The process begins with INSiGHT Scans, which are designed to identify areas where a child’s nervous system is experiencing stress and sympathetic dominance.

From there, gentle and specific chiropractic adjustments are used to support movement in the upper neck and brainstem region. The goal is to help restore balance within the neurospinal system and support healthy drainage and neuro-immune function.

As the nervous system becomes more regulated and adaptable, families may notice changes in the recurring pattern they have been dealing with, including fewer infections, improved recovery, and greater overall resilience.

You Don’t Have to Simply Wait for the Next Infection

If your child is caught in a repeating cycle of ear infections, antibiotics, and ENT referrals, it can be exhausting to feel like you’re always waiting for the next problem to appear.

Children like Luca deserve more than simply moving from one prescription or procedure to the next without asking what may be contributing to the recurring pattern.

The first step may be asking a different question: Why does this keep happening?

At Perfect by Design, we help families look more closely at the nervous system to better understand what may be happening beneath the symptoms.

If your child has been experiencing recurring ear infections, frequent antibiotic use, or recommendations for ENT care, reach out to Perfect by Design to schedule an INSiGHT Scan and take a closer look at what may be happening within their nervous system.

Your child’s journey toward better health can begin with understanding the bigger picture.
